Up through first grade, I thought I deserved to be bullied because I was such an unlovable child. It was in second grade that I realized that bullying me was wrong. In retrospect, I think part of it was that I read Young Wizards, with all its pseudo-Christian martydom, die-heroically-to-stop-Satan stuff. And I hated it so much that it made me question whether my own martydom was really necessary.
