The thing about AO3 discourse is that AO3 isn't meant to be THE archive. It's the archive that doesn't purge stuff, and it exists separately from archives that do purge stuff. Those archives can have a separate value. So when you argue that AO3 should purge stuff, you're not just arguing about AO3 itself. You're arguing about whether it's wrong for there to exist any site at all that has AO3's goals.

Like, really, if AO3 hosting "problematic" content is so unbearable, is it that hard to create an archive of your own? (Well, okay, we've been building a website on a similar "start your own" mentality lately so we know it's hardly a trivial task, but it is definitely a thing that can be done!)

... But of course that's not the issue. They don't want an archive that meets their needs so they can use that one, they want every archive to meet their needs whether they use it or not.
