It's funny that people think of visual novels as all cutesy romances, because my default assumption about a visual novel is "you are about to see some serious shit." Even disregarding the extremes like Song of Saya or Muv-Luv Alternative, stuff like ROOT√DOUBLE tends to be way more gruesome than an equivalent book or movie would be.
