On the one hand, if you model an authority figure as cynical, self-interested, and only doing good things when it benefits their reputation, you’ll end up with pretty good predictions as to which actions they’ll take. I don’t believe that power corrupts, but I believe that people who don’t embrace corrupt power structures tend to end up without power themselves.
On the other hand, if you model an authority figure as believing the things they say about what motivates them, you’ve got a pretty good lever with which to make them take better actions. People like to feel good about themselves, and if they say their actions are selfless, they can take a “selfless” action because it selfishly gives them good fuzzies.
Naturally, this gets tricky when dealing with people like Donald Trump who say they like money and sex.
