A lot of my failed attempts at jokes that resulted in people thinking I was stupid or annoying were in some way inspired by a specific radio commercial. A guy accidentally broke his television and couldn’t watch a football game, and he said “I was just trying to change the hue. I don’t even know what a hue is!” I wouldn’t say I’m referencing that commercial per se, since I don’t expect people to recognize it, but I try to be funny in the same way that commercial was funny, and it consistently backfires.
