A worldbuilding idea: magical artifacts slowly draw in magic and become more powerful over the years. There are limits based on the materials and craftsmanship, but a truly great artifact only reaches its full potential after thousands of years. Unfortunately, artifacts aren’t immune to wear and tear, and weapons and armor in particular have a tendency to break from regular use. That’s why the best weapons and armor are the ones that belonged to ancient royalty and got preserved in their tombs.

Nah, I want to avoid having any way to make a truly powerful magical artifact within the lifetime of the creator. This is actually me coming up with Ducktales worldbuilding for why casters are so useless when you take away their ancient artifacts. They can’t just make new artifacts because the age is important in itself. In the show, Scrooge views magic as a way of achieving things without talent, practice, or effort, and the best way I’ve found to explain that is that your own effort will only benefit some other caster in the future.
