Becoming the Chosen One is a kind of survivorship bias. For each person some dark lord terrorizes, there’s a chance they’ll fight back. For each person who fights back, there’s a chance—a small chance—that they’ll win. Then the one who happens to win is thought to have been the Chosen One all along. That’s why, no matter how many dark lords try to destroy the world, the world is never actually destroyed. When the entire world has reason to fight you, eventually someone will get a lucky hit in.
