Worldbuilding from a story I never finished:

Soul parasites are difficult to kill. They have an easy-to-reach “body“ and hard-to-reach “roots,” and they can regenerate from a single “root.“ But losing the body is still painful and unpleasant.

Plants don’t really have distinct souls. They mush together with other nearby plants. The older and more numerous the souls, the bigger they get, and while they’re not really “aware” in the conventional sense of the word, they do have behaviors and appetites.

Some parasites try to feed on plant souls. But in return, a sufficiently large plant soul can snack on parasites, like a chimp eating ticks. So most human-targeting parasites stay quiet and inactive when around large plant souls, trying not to be noticed. If you want your soul parasite to leave you alone for a while, go to an old-growth forest.

Oooooh I like that. Especially since old-growth forest is OLD, and probably older than an individual parasite!
