I read somewhere that one of the really early D&D-inspired books reversed the logic of class levels. Instead of becoming more powerful by leveling up, you improve your “level” in the adventuring guild by showing them you’ve become more powerful and can take on tougher jobs. I feel like this has so much potential. Sure, your Rogue is doing great at sneak attacks, but you can’t rank up until you learn how to dodge fireballs. Does a level 3 Fighter/level 3 Cleric merit the same jobs as a level 6 Fighter? Guild membership has a literacy requirement, but they had to waive it for Barbarians.

In 2E, druids that got to a certain level had to not just gain enough XP before they could level up, but also defeat a higher level druid and take their spot. And then once they got to level 20 they would serve as archdruid for six months (or until another druid beat them) and then retire and go back down to level 10 or something.

I think it's an interesting concept but it would also drive me mad to play lmao.
