Today in bad rationalist takes: not wanting to be yelled at and insulted is ableist against people who have depression, because it’s their mental illness that’s making them yell at and insult you.

Rationalist? Take???? I swear I've heard that exact same argument from "MI-positive" people.

The whole "not wanting me to punch you is ableist" is deeply enraging to me. Because A) not helping anybody, certainly not disabled folks, and B) I've mostly seen it used to justify abusive douchebag behavior, which should not be acceptable coming from ANYBODY.

(Plus, watching a conversation about "your behavior is unacceptable" turn into a mental-illness-dicksizing contest--"well, my PTSD is TRIGGERED by your depressive outbursts, therefore meaning I outrank you!"--is just a massive derail that makes things EVER WORSE.)

It was stuff like that that kinda led to me having nothing to do with mental illness tumblr, because I just couldn't deal with the, "if your mental illness is improved by anything whatsoever YOU ARE NOT REALLY MENTALLY ILL" and the "chronic assholism is a mental illness, why are you so ableist against the chronic assholes?"
