Mar. 26th, 2023 11:54 amThe latest post going around calling out “antisemitism” sure does equivocate between “hating Jews” and “opposing the murder of Palestinians.” Just like the one before that, and the one before that.
(Fuck, I thought Athingofvikings was better than this. I knew they were to Judaism what Orson Scott Card is to Mormonism, but they’ve at least been decent enough before to say that war crimes are bad.)

Jul. 1st, 2022 09:07 pmFrom a comment by a Jewish blogger: “Judaism isn't a religion in the way that Christianity, and only Christianity, is. The word ‘religion’ comes to us through the filter of Christianity, but the collection of entities it refers to have almost nothing universally in common.”
From a recommended post on Tumblr: “Some conservatives openly believe that ‘freedom of religion’ only means ‘freedom to choose a Christian denomination,’ and many more quietly believe it. They also believe that only Christianity really counts. Like, recently Reason argued that Judaism isn't really a religion & thus can't claim ethical stances like defending abortion, since it's not Christian enough in structure. They literally don't see those other religions as religions at all!”
Sometimes it’s just a matter of what valence you use.

Jan. 28th, 2022 10:32 pmShout out to that time years ago when this one blog posted a Jewish story. It was about a group of rabbis, all but one of whom supported one interpretation of the Talmud. The one rabbi refused to give up his own interpretation. God’s voice came down and told them all the one rabbi was right, but the other rabbis said God lost the majority vote.
Some blogs thought the point of the story was that the other rabbis were right, and God isn’t something that stands above you, but someone you can argue with. Other blogs thought the point of the story was that the other rabbis were stubborn and disrespectful. They posted back and forth about it for some time.
I only realized this just now, but these Jewish bloggers were arguing over when Jews should give up and stop arguing.

Mar. 25th, 2020 10:42 pmI recently saw a Jewish blogger post about how the emphasis on punishment over redemption is a Christian thing that seems alien and even cruel from a Jewish perspective. I recently saw a different Jewish blogger discuss a particular adaptation of A Christmas Carol from a Jewish perspective, praising the way it emphasizes punishment rather than redemption. Maybe whether you believe in punishment or redemption isn’t a matter of being Jewish, but just a matter of being you.
And I’m blocked now. Not surprising, I suppose.
Honestly, I don’t have nearly as much against Judaism as I do against some other religions. A lot of the things Jewish writers say seem to me like good things, or at least unobjectionable. I just don’t like the two-step between “it’s a religion” and “if you criticize it, you’re racist.” I could not care less who your mother was. It’s philosophy I argue about, not anything to do with “blood,” and I hate to see someone dodge out of the way so their philosophy can’t be criticized.
(There’s this one Jewish blogger I read sometimes who refers to Jesus as “Oily Josh” and openly hates him. I think every creed should be vulnerable to that level of criticism, and if you hate my saying that, I applaud you.)
